Washington’s actions deadlock Russian-US relations (Russian Foreign Ministry)

Washington is intentionally dead-locking the Russia-US relations, and it will take a long time to get out of that deadlock, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday...

According to Lukashevich, the reason behind the US policy is simple: to interfere with natural integration processes in the territory of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

"The US military budget allocates $640 million for Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine to enable them to counteract Russia," Lukashevich said.

"If the United States has switched over to fixing special appropriations in its budget designed to counteract Russia, the process has really gone too far. Russia has no doubt that the White House, which is playing a senseless game of sanctions, has set on a course of confrontation (with Russia). But now, the talk is about plans to finance some subversive activities directed against our country. That is raising tensions in Russian-American relations to a new level," Lukashevich stressed.

"Such concepts vividly prove that the US policy line is brought down to pure geopolitics. Its aim is to tear away Ukraine and other neighboring countries from Russia by all means and without fail," the Russian diplomat stressed.

Obama says US restoring ties with Cuba (five decades after diplomatic relations were severed)

The United States will restore full diplomatic relations with Cuba more than 50 years after they were severed, US President Barack Obama has said, just hours after Havana announced it had released a US aid worker who had been jailed for five years in Cuba.

"Today the US is changing its relationship with the people of Cuba. We'll begin to normalise relations between our two nations. Through these changes, we intend to create more opportunities for the American and Cuban people and begin a new chapter," said Obama.

The US president said he had spoken to his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro on Tuesday about arrangements to release US aid worker Alan Gross, who was arrested in 2009 in Cuba and jailed for five years, on humanitarian grounds.

US media reported a prisoner exchange that also included Cuba releasing a US intelligence source and the US releasing three Cuban intelligence agents.

Obama said he had instructed Secretary of State John Kerry to immediately initiate discussions with Cuba on the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, which were severed in 1961.

"In the coming months, we will re-establish an embassy in Havana and carry out high-level exchanges and visits between our two governments as part of the normalisation process," Obama said.

"As an initial step, the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs will lead the US Delegation to the next round of US-Cuba Migration Talks in January 2015, in Havana."

Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane, reporting from Washington, said the trade embargo imposed on Cuba after ties were severed can only be lifted by Congress.

"Senior administration officials tell me they don't think Congress is going to lift the embargo. We have seen several members of Congress come out and call the president's moves 'outrageous'," she said.
Cuban President Raul Castro said he welcomed the restoration of relations with the US.
In a nationally broadcast speech, the Cuban leader said profound differences remained between Cuba and the US in areas such as human rights, foreign policy and questions of sovereignty, but he said the two nations have to learn to live with their differences "in a civilised manner".................http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2014/12/cuba-releases-us-aid-worker-alan-gross-20141217142522855301.html

China rejects Britain's "moral duty" to Hong Kong

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday rejected Britain's "moral duty" to Hong Kong, adding some British lawmakers' attempts to meddle in China's internal affairs is "not acceptable" and "doomed to fail."

"Britain has no sovereignty over, no governance of, and no superintendence over Hong Kong since Hong Kong returned to China in 1997," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing.

In an emergency debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Members of Parliament called on the British government to condemn China for refusing a delegation from the House of Commons foreign affairs select committee to visit Hong Kong. Some MPs claimed that as a party of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, Britain still has a "moral duty" to Hong Kong.

The Joint Declaration has made clear the respective obligations and responsibilities of China and Britain on China's resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong and arrangements for the transitional period, said Hua.

"Some British lawmakers tried to use this so-called 'moral duty' to mislead the public and interfere in China's internal affairs. This is not acceptable, and the attempt is doomed to fail," she said.

China slams British MPs’ attempt to visit Hong Kong

China on Monday explained its refusal to allow British lawmakers to visit Hong Kong and urged them not to interfere in Hong Kong's affairs.

"The Chinese central government and the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have told Britain several times that they resolutely opposed the so-called delegation of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee going to Hong Kong for a so-called investigation and asked for the visit to be canceled," said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying at a regular press briefing.

Hua was responding to a question regarding remarks made by the chairman of the British House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee who said China had acted in an overtly confrontational manner by refusing to allow them to visit the former British territory.

Hua said if certain British lawmakers were determined to travel to Hong Kong, that would be genuinely overt confrontational move and not beneficial for Sino-British ties.

"China has many times expressed its firm opposition to any foreign government, organization or person's interference in HK affairs, which are China's internal affairs," she added.

Israel will ‘never’ limit Jerusalem settlements (Avigdor Lieberman)

Israel will never agree to limit its construction activity in Occupied East Jerusalem, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Sunday. “One thing should be clear: we will never accept the definition of building in Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem as settlement activity,” he said at a news conference with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

“We won’t accept any limitation on building in Jewish areas of (east) Jerusalem,” he said.

His remarks came four days after Israel approved plans to build 200 homes in Ramot in Occupied East Jerusalem despite months of almost daily clashes and tensions there with Palestinians, triggered in part by settlement expansion.

The announcement prompted a sharply-worded rebuke from Washington which reiterated its “unequivocal” opposition to such construction in east Jerusalem, warning it could “exacerbate this difficult situation on the ground and... will not contribute to efforts to reduce the tension.”

--------
Israel seized east Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed in a move never recognized by the international community.

It refers to the entire city as its “united, undivided capital” and does not view construction there as settlement activity.

The Palestinians want the city’s eastern sector as capital of their promised state and vehemently oppose any Israeli attempt to expand construction there.

Turkish company offers Israel to build pipeline. -Mathew Bryza announced the offer worth $2.5 billion during an energy conference held in Cyprus.

Turkey’s Turcas Holding has submitted a $2.5 billion offer to Israel for the construction of a 470-kilometer pipeline between Israel and Turkey.

Istanbul (Constantinople)-based Turcas Holding has offered Israel, which has started to discover considerable amounts of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean, to build a pipeline under the sea from Israel to Turkey’s southern province of Mersin. A member of the board, Mathew Bryza announced the offer worth $2.5 billion during an energy conference held in Cyprus.

Byrza, a former American diplomat, said the 470-kilometers-long pipeline would have a capacity to transfer 16 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year. He also stressed that if the political problems between Turkey and Israel affected the construction, all cost and responsibility would be assumed by Turcas.

Besides, Israeli daily Globes said Turkey’s Zorlu Group was also in talks with Israel for pipeline building and buying natural gas. Globus said Zorlu, which was constructing a power plant in the Ashkelon province of Israel, contacted the companies that had shares in Israel’s natural gas region Leviathan and made offers for buying natural gas and constructing a pipeline.

Israel’s government in June approved limiting natural gas exports to about 40 percent of the country’s newly-discovered offshore reserves. Two of the world’s largest offshore fields found in the past decade lie in Israeli waters. Tamar, with an estimated 280 bcm, was discovered in 2009, and a year later Leviathan was found, with an estimated 530 bcm.
